Guggenheim Museum Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi’s famed cultural district, Saadiyat Island, is all set to have its crown embedded with a massive diamond of remarkable beauty, the Abu Dhabi Guggenheim Museum. The incredible new landmark in Saadiyat Island has been designed by architect Frank Gehry, who also designed the titanium-clad Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain.
The Design And The Inspiration
The Guggenheim Museum in Abu Dhabi will be blessed with spectacular views of the Saadiyat Cultural District and Arabian Gulf. The building looks like a modernistic art installation, with huge open cones that let the elements in. This design was inspired by the UAE’s ancient wind-towers, which were used to ventilate and shade homes. The cones of the Guggenheim Museum will now ventilate and shade the museum’s exterior courtyards, in a fitting salute to Arabian tradition while incorporating modern design sensibilities.
What Abu Dhabi Guggenheim Museum Represents
The Guggenheim Museum will be the symbol of Abu Dhabi’s keen interest to promote global contemporary art and culture in the UAE. This new and upcoming preeminent platform will present, for the first time to the public in Abu Dhabi, our most important artistic achievements, ranging from ancient sculptures to recent modern abstract paintings. The Guggenheim Museum Abu Dhabi’s permanent collection, exhibitions, educational programs and scholarly publications will be aimed at bringing to light that when it comes to art, culture and art history, there are no national borders or politics. Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is all set to take that vital step beyond geographically-defined global art definitions.
The Interiors Of The Guggenheim Museum
The Guggenheim Museum encompasses 13,000 square meters of total gallery space. These galleries will display local, regional and international art, and will be distributed around a glass atrium on four levels, each connected by glass bridges above. Even the eleven iconic cone-like structures that are part of the architectural element will be used as exhibition space. Visitors will be able to view site-specific lovely artworks in each of the cones, works done by leading contemporary artists. An educational center is being built off the soaring glass atrium along with a 350-seat theatre. These locations will be used to offer educational programs and coursers on performing arts. The educational facilities will be state-of-the-art; a wide variety of lectures, musical recitals, symposia, panels, theatre productions, film viewings and live performances will be conducted here. Abu Dhabi’s Guggenheim Museum is all set to become the emirate’s art appreciation and education center extraordinaire, and will be a definite tourist draw to the emirate.
